Jaipur to Lucknow Road Trip: Mathura Temples & Expressway | Day-4
Day-4 of our Rajasthan trip was the phase of Jaipur to Lucknow road trip. Have you ever made a huge mistake on a road trip just because you trusted a map’s “shortcut”? The fourth day of our grand cross-country journey was supposed to be a simple transit day. Our big plan was to wake up early, drive out of colorful Rajasthan, make a mid-day stop in the holy city of Mathura to see the birthplace of Lord Krishna, and then cruise into Lucknow for a good night’s sleep.
But sometimes, traveling long distances shows you that real-world roads are very different from digital maps! Because we were so tired from climbing mountain forts the day before, we woke up super late & starting preparations for Jaipur to lucknow by car. We finally packed our bags and checked out of our Jaipur hotel at 7:45 AM. Our digital map showed we would reach Mathura by noon, but a massive driving mistake was about to completely change our day of Jaipur to Lucknow drive.
🛠️ The Secret Recipe for a UP Transit Drive
Driving from Jaipur to Lucknow Road Trip means switching from tourist cities to heavy-duty highways. To survive this long driving day, you need a smart plan. The secret to this route is simple: never take rural shortcuts, and always check temple closing times!Because we started late, we hit terrible midday traffic and ran straight into locked temple doors. If you want a smooth ride, stick to the main national toll roads, even if the map says it takes a little longer.
📋 Quick Fleet, Logistics & Route Stats
- Total Distance: 610 Kilometers (A massive jump from Jaipur to Lucknow mega car drive)
- Our Ride:Ford Ecosport Diesel (Our trusty car took a major beating on bumpy village roads today!)
- Smart Money Trick: Pay the extra fuel and toll money to stay on the main National Highway. State highway shortcuts will ruin your car’s tires and waste your time!
- Mega Highways Conquered:Agra-Lucknow Expressway
- Toll Tax Budget: Jaipur to Lucknow toll was Around ₹850 total for the day (Automatically paid through our electronic FASTag)
📍 The Bharatpur-Mathura Highway Gamble
By 8:30 AM, a steady, cool rain started falling over the highway. We pulled our Ford Ecosport into a large highway resort to grab some breakfast. We ordered a massive, delicious meal of hot, stuffed Aloo Paranthas (potato flatbreads), bowls of fresh cold yogurt (raita), and steaming cups of tea. The total bill came to just ₹760 for the three of us, and it gave us the energy we needed!
Getting back on the road, we made quick, easy progress down the primary national highway toward Bharatpur. We zoomed right through the FASTag toll gates, paying ₹80, ₹55, ₹25, and ₹40 for the NHAI toll plaza on the Jaipur to Lucknow tolls. The road here was super smooth.
But then, our navigation map gave us a choice:
- The Safe Route:Stay on the big, fenced-in highway for 70 more kilometers & take final Mathua stopover.
- The Shortcut:Take a sharp left turn onto a small 45-kilometer state road that cuts right through the villages straight to Mathura.
Because we were running late, we decided to take the shorter 45 km option. This was a terrible mistake.
The second we turned off, our car was pulled straight into the heavily crowded, narrow market streets of Bharatpur town. The rain had turned the deeply broken road patches into giant, muddy potholes. It was a single-lane dirt road completely jammed with oversized village buses and giant farming tractors. We had to constantly drive our car off the road and into the muddy dirt just to let the tractors pass! It was incredibly stressful, required non-stop braking, and actually took us longerthan the safe route. This route was the worst part of the patch from Jaipur to lucknow road trip.
📍Facing the Strict Temple Windows of Mathura
We finally crossed the Uttar Pradesh state border and rolled into the holy city of Mathura at 12:42 PM. We paid a ₹100 parking fee at a safe lot near the central shrine. But as soon as we stepped out of the car, we hit a frustrating wall at mathura stopover.
Here is a massive reality check for tourists: almost every single major historical temple in Mathura and Vrindavan closes its doors completely between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM every single day for afternoon rest!
The only major site that stays open during this hot mid-day window is the highly guarded Krishna Janmabhoomi(The ancient prison cell where Lord Krishna was born). We walked over to explore it, but we immediately ran into intense police security.
🚨 CRITICAL MONUMENT LAW: You cannot take ANYTHING inside! Absolutely no smartphones, smart car keys, remote fobs, fitness watches, earphones, or even leather belts are allowed past the security gates.
You have to stand in a long, hot, un-ventilated line just to lock all your personal items inside the public locker counters before they let you in.
By the time we finished exploring and walked back out, the intense afternoon heat and sticky humidity had completely drained our energy. We realized that waiting around in the sun until 4:00 PM for the other temples to open would completely ruin our night drive. So, we made the sad choice to skip Vrindavan entirely, saving it for a future trip, and turned our car toward Lucknow.
🗺️ The Blueprint for Future Travelers
Never treat Mathura and Vrindavan like a quick “drive-by” stop! To truly experience the magic without getting exhausted, you need to dedicate at least two full days here. Here is the perfect mini-itinerary:
🌅 Day 1: Mathura Stopover
Spend your very first day exploring the highly guarded historical sites (like the Krishna Janmabhoomi) and relaxing by the peaceful, quiet river banks.
🛕 Day 2: Vrindavan
Dedicate this whole day to navigating the crowded streets of Vrindavan. Visit the famous temples during their early morning or late evening opening windows when the weather is cool and breezy!
📍The Night Race Down the Agra-Lucknow Expressway
By 3:41 PM, we finally escaped the slow, narrow city traffic of Mathura. We drove up the ramp and transitioned directly onto the massive, beautiful Agra-Lucknow Expressway. In Jaipur to Lucknow road trip by Car you can merge to this expressway at Agra & no need to go Mathura. The automated toll gate beeped and deducted a heavy ₹650 fee from our FASTag wallet, but it was worth every single penny.
Our dashboard screen showed a clean, straight 317-kilometer run all the way to Lucknow. By 5:30 PM, we made a quick stop at an official highway rest stop for a late lunch and to stretch our legs. As the sun set and darkness fell over the countryside, all the local traffic completely disappeared. The highway was basically empty & our drive from Jaipur to Lucknow was making us feeling much enriched after the exhaustive taste of narrow roads at Mathura stopover.
I pushed our speed up to a steady, safe 110 kmph as my friend were carving to taste tundey kabab tonight. Our Ford Ecosport ran beautifully on the smooth blacktop. The bright headlights sliced right through the dark night, and we cleared the final Lucknow exit gates by 9:00 PM & it was almost the end of our Jaipur to lucknow road trip.
By 10:00 PM, we drove into the famous, narrow street lanes of Aminabad in Lucknow & our new target was to experience the taste of Tundey Kabab . We were here for one reason: to eat the world-famous, authentic Tunday Kabab. Because it was so late at night, the crazy daytime shopping markets were closed. This was super lucky because it allowed us to park our car right on the street next to the restaurant—something that is completely impossible to do during the day!
We ate a giant, rich dinner of spicy Mughlai paranthas and meat kababs that literally melted in our mouths. With full bellies and heavy eyes, we drove to the outer ring road near the Purvanchal Expressway entrance and checked into our hotel at midnight. We were totally exhausted, but ready for the final drive back to Patna tomorrow! It was the marathon Jaipur to Lucknow road trip via Mathura.
