The final morning of our massive Lucknow to Patna road trip started with one clear goal: drive a smooth 440 kilometers from the outer ring road of Lucknow straight back to our home in Patna. We woke up early at 7:00 AM, packed our travel bags back into the trunk of our Ford Ecosport, and checked out of our hotel by 7:30 AM. Within just fifteen minutes of hitting the road, our car zoomed up the entry ramp onto the famous Purvanchal Expressway, ready for the long drive Lucknow to patna by Road.

📍 The Calm Before the Storm: Tea Stalls and Cruising

Right before we passed through the massive main entry toll gate, we spotted a small, local tea stall on the side of the road. We pulled our car over to enjoy a fresh, hot cup of morning cutting chai. We also bought a basket of fresh, sweet bananas and guavas from a local village vendor so we would have healthy snacks for the long drive.

By 7:45 AM, we officially started driving on the Purvanchal Expressway, the only expressway from Lucknow to patna. The early morning traffic was super light, almost empty! Our car engine hummed smoothly as we cruised down the wide, clean lanes. By 9:30 AM, we pulled into a modern highway service plaza to eat a nice breakfast, feeling very relaxed.

📍 A Flash of Terror: The Sudden Danger of Hydroplaning

Shortly after we finished breakfast and got back on the road, the clear blue morning sky completely vanished. It was replaced by a giant, dark monsoon storm! A massive wall of heavy rain lashed against our car, instantly dropping our visibility down to just a few meters. I kept our speed at 100 kmph, relying on the car’s cruise control to keep us moving steadily in the fast lane right next to the middle concrete divider.

Then, in a fraction of a second, we faced a terrifying emergency on purvanchal expressway.

As our car turned through a long curve, our front tires hit a massive, hidden puddle of deep water that was trapped against the concrete wall. Instantly, the steering wheel went completely soft and loose in my hands. Our front wheels lost all physical contact with the hard road. The car began to slide violently sideways!

This incredibly dangerous thing is called Hydroplaning. Our heavy car was literally floating on a thin sheet of water, completely disconnected from the road like a slippery ice skate!

My brain wanted to panic and slam on the brakes, but doing that would have locked the wheels and sent our car spinning out of control into the concrete wall! Instead, I gripped the steering wheel tightly to keep it pointed straight, totally lifted my foot off the gas pedal, and just let the water slow the car down naturally.

Within two long, scary seconds, the car slowed down enough for the tires to cut through the water and grip the hard asphalt again. I immediately tapped the brakes to turn off the cruise control and dropped our speed down to a very safe 80 kmph.

⚠️ CRITICAL MONSOON DRIVING LAW: Modern expressways look smooth, but dangerous pools of water often hide in the extreme right fast lane during heavy rain. If you hit this water at 100+ kmph, your car will float and you will lose control! The very second heavy rain begins, turn off your cruise control and manually drop your speed to 75-80 kmph to keep your tires safely on the road.

📍 Crossing the State Line Back Into Dry Bihar

By 12:20 PM, our car safely reached the very end of the Purvanchal Expressway near Ghazipur which gave us a very pleasant driving experience from Lucknow to Patna by car drive on our Ford Ecosport. We paid the final automated toll and pointed our car down a narrow, bumpy 15-kilometer state road leading to the Buxar border crossing. This small connecting road required a lot of patience because it was totally jammed with slow-moving delivery trucks and giant farm tractors.

As we got closer to the official Buxar border check post, we got ready for the police to search our car. Bihar is a strict “dry state,” which means alcohol is completely illegal. Because of this, police checkpoints always search cars coming in from Uttar Pradesh!

Luckily, the police officers looked at our Patna license plates and kindly waved us through without making us unpack our bags. But you must always follow the law!

💡 Strict Border Law Warning: As an absolute rule for anyone driving across borders into Bihar, NEVER carry even a single bottle of alcohol inside your vehicle. The legal penalties are incredibly severe, including instant jail time and the police permanently taking away your car. Keep your vehicle completely clean!

📍 The Dusty Finish and Final Vehicle Evaluation

Once we cleared the Buxar border and hopped back onto the familiar four-lane National Highway, our driving became relaxed again. Our FASTag wallet beeped and took its final ₹100 toll, and by 1:50 PM, we reached the Ara Bypass.

We pulled into the exact same Desi Thaat Dhabawhere our huge journey had started five days ago! We celebrated our successful trip with a simple, delicious traditional Indian lunch thali filled with hot rice, dal, and fresh local vegetables. Leaving the dhaba, we paid our final ₹105 highway toll near Ara and prepared for the final, annoying challenge of the trip: the broken, dusty, under-construction roads stretching from Koilwar back into Patna city. We moved very slowly through the heavy dust clouds and rough dirt paths, finally rolling into our home driveway exactly at 4:00 PM! Driving from Lucknow to Patna was very pleasant & we all enjoyed it all.
